From Passion to Profit: Shawn Docksader’s Food Entrepreneurship Journey with Oneida Sweet Treats

For Shawn Docksader, the founder and owner of Oneida Sweet Treats, in Oneida Nation of the Thames, Delaware Ontario, the journey into the food and beverage industry was born out of passion, community, and a desire to create something meaningful.

From his early days learning to cook in high school to launching his own business during the pandemic, Shawn knows first-hand about pursuing your passion for food, and building a rewarding career in the industry.

Discovering a Passion for Cooking

Shawn’s interest in cooking started in high school when he enrolled in a culinary program. The course, initially a prerequisite for other classes, quickly became something he loved.

It was here his instructor, Basil, nurtured his love for cooking, which would make a lasting impact. Shawn loved the course so much, he even asked to take it again!

“I really liked that course,” Shawn recalls. “I talked to my teachers and principal to see if I could do it again the next year because it was only offered once.”

This foundational course led him to pursue Food and Beverage Management at Fanshawe College, where he learned about the front and back ends of running a food business.

From marketing to cooking programs, Shawn gained hands-on experience in the culinary world, preparing him for the future he envisioned.

Gaining Experience in the Food and Beverage Industry

After college, Shawn immersed himself in the industry, working at Steel Grill Catering in London, Ontario. He quickly became the head chef for weddings, gaining invaluable experience in large-scale event catering.

He also worked at Budweiser Gardens, helping with backstage catering for various events. These experiences refined his skills and deepened his appreciation for the food industry’s fast-paced and rewarding nature.

“I’ve done pretty much events my whole life,” Shawn says. “Being a part of weddings, concerts, and other big occasions showed me how food brings people together.”

Turning a Passion for Food Into a Business

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Shawn found himself at a crossroads.

With events and catering shutting down, he decided to make a cake for his birthday—just for fun. However, when friends and family saw his creation, they wanted to order one too.

“It kind of just kicked off from there,” Shawn explains. “People started ordering cakes, and then other treats, and I thought, ‘I need to call myself something.’”

He named his business Oneida Sweet Treats as a way to give back to his community. His goal was to create something for his family, friends, and fellow community members while celebrating his Oneida heritage. What started as a passion project quickly turned into a thriving business.

Growing Oneida Sweet Treats

Today, Oneida Sweet Treats is more than just a home bakery. Shawn has transformed a detached garage into a storefront where customers can buy cupcakes, candy apples, cookies, and specialty drinks. In the summer, the business expands to include a barbecue setup and fresh pasta options.

While Shawn initially handled everything on his own—from baking and cake decorating to purchasing ingredients—he now has a small team to support him. Though, you will still always find him baking!

“I just love baking,” he says. “I like to follow the recipe and ensure everything turns out exactly right.”

Advice for Aspiring Food and Beverage Entrepreneurs

Shawn believes that the food and beverage industry offers incredible opportunities for young people. Whether it’s working in a restaurant, in food manufacturing, or starting their own business, there’s room for anyone with passion and dedication.

“It’s fun to follow your passion,” he says. “If cooking is something you love, go for it. There’s so much to learn about food—nutrition, quality, and how it affects our bodies. Plus, when you make things from scratch, you can save money and make healthier choices.”

Shawn encourages those considering a food and beverage manufacturing career to simply go for it.

“You can think about it all you want, but once you start doing it, it’s very rewarding,” he says. “Younger generations need to feel that sense of accomplishment. Take the steps, listen to those around you, and pursue what you’re passionate about.”

Looking to the Future

As Oneida Sweet Treats continues to grow, Shawn is focused on expanding his catering services and creating memorable experiences through food. His dream is to cater high-profile events and continue spreading joy through his creations.

“We got to cook for the Mighty Ducks when they won the Stanley Cup,” he shares. “Getting to meet incredible people, witnessing beautiful weddings, and seeing people enjoy our food—it makes everything worth it.”
